Prof. Brochu graduated in 1999 from Laval University with a Bachelor in Metallurgical Engineering and received his Ph.D. (Hons) in 2003 from McGill University. He then worked at the National Research Council of Canada – Aerospace Manufacturing and Technology Center on electron beam welding and additive manufacturing of aerospace materials. He then accepted a post-doctoral position at the Advanced Materials Laboratory - Sandia National Laboratories. Late 2004, Dr. Brochu returned to Canada to start an academic career at McGill University, and is now Associate Professor in the Department of Mining and Materials Engineering. He is holder of the Canada Research Chair on Pulse Processing of Nanostructured Materials and the Hydro-Québec NanoEngineer Chair. He is the Interim Director of REGAL, a Quebec Research Center focusing on aluminum production and transformation, including metallurgy and new aluminum products. He received several distinctions, including the ASM Bradley Stoughton Award for Young Teachers in 2009 and the METSOC Brimacombe Award in 2011. His research interests mainly revolve around rapid sintering of metal powders and control of microstructure during rapid solidification for joining and additive manufacturing (AM). As part of his CRC, he has developed new Al-based alloys and has engineered new laser-based processes to permit AM of nanomaterials. These concepts were translated into AM of alloys sensitive to solidification cracking, particularly Al alloys (AA). He is currently leading projects on AM of aerospace and automotive AA, new high strength filters and Ti alloys for aerospace and biomedical applications.
