Dr. Timothy R. Armstrong was appointed Vice President – Research and Product Commercialization of Carpenter Technology Corporation in August of 2008.

Armstrong guides Carpenter’s technology vision and provides leadership in strategic areas of materials processing and alloy development. He has corporate responsibility for all of Carpenter’s new products and forward looking technical strategy. Armstrong leads the development of the Corporation’s open innovation network and strategy, which now has research efforts in five countries around the world.

Before joining Carpenter, Armstrong worked for Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, holding positions as the manager of Hydrogen and Fuel Cells and, prior to that, the manager of Functional Materials. He also held positions at Battelle Memorial Institute and Allied Signal Aerospace Corporation. While at Battelle, he received numerous awards for building teams to solve customer technical issues.

Armstrong earned a bachelor’s degree in ceramic engineering from the Ohio State University, and a master’s degree and doctorate in ceramic engineering from the University of Illinois.

In addition to serving as a member of the advisory board of the Ohio State University’s Institute for Materials Research, he also serves on the board of directors of the Advanced Materials Research Centre at the University of Sheffield and is vice president of the High Temperature Materials Divisions of the Electrochemical Society. He has previously served on Texaco’s Science Advisory Board and on the advisory board of the Powerquest Investment Fund. Armstrong also has more than 90 publications, 10 patents and has edited four proceedings on nanomaterials and solid state devices.

Carpenter Technology, based in Wyomissing, PA, produces and distributes specialty alloys, including stainless steels, titanium alloys and superalloys, and various engineered products.
